30in. nitro reproved barrels, sunken ribs engraved 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND, 98 NEW BOND STREET. LONDON.', and gold-inlaid '1' and 2', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. and imp. cyl. choke, wall thicknesses below recommended minimum, toplevers gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, the actions, lockplates and furniture finely engraved with acanthus scrollwork and floral bouquets with decorative bordering, the lockplates with false stepped tails, the undersides with oval cartouches inscribed 'ROYAL HAMMERLESS PATENT EJECTOR', retaining traces of original colour-hardening and finish, 14 3/8in. figured stocks (No.1 with small wood plugs, No.2 minor damage to underhorns), horn buttplates, weight 6lb. 7oz., in their brass-cornered oak and leather case with leather lined interior and leather internal protecting flap, the lid exterior with circular brass escutcheon engraved 'R.V. TOYNBEE. RIFLE BRIGADE'

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this pair was completed in December 1894 for 'Toynbee'.

Captain Geoffrey Percy Robert Toynbee (18 May 1885 – 15 November 1914) was an English cricketer.

He attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, where he was one of the most prolific batsmen for the Academy, averaging 70.71 in 1904 and 42.33 in 1905.

Toynbee fought in the First World War, serving in the Rifle Brigade as a Captain. On 15 November 1914 Toynbee was killed in action at Ploegstraete, Nord-Pas-de-Calais in France.
